Vernon Roberson was born on December 18, 1932, in Thorndale, Texas, to Sherman Roberson and Edna Mae Green. At the age of 14, he began working on the family farm, where he diligently plowed fields and herded cattle—instilling in him a strong work ethic that remained throughout his life.
He gave his life to God at an early age and remained steadfast in his faith. Vernon later moved to Slaton, Texas, where he met and married the love of his life, Joyce Roberson, in 1974. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. He was a devoted and God-fearing husband, father, and patriarch who raised eight children: Lavance Samuels , Aaron Samuels Sr., Laroi Samuels, Zelma Roberson, Patsy Roberson, Gayle Lanell Otuemhobe, Leslie Roberson and Jaquatta Manahan. His legacy of love and strength will forever be cherished.
Vernon found great joy in serving the Lord and his church community. He faithfully served as a deacon for over 50 years and was a dedicated treasurer at Triumph Missionary Baptist Church. He later continued his walk of faith at The Tabernacle of Truth Church, where he served faithfully for eight years under Pastor Lavance Samuels.
Professionally, Vernon worked as a semi-truck driver for 28 years, earning the nickname “Sandman.” He took great pride in his work and found joy in mentoring others, especially those who followed in his footsteps—including several of his grandsons.
He appreciated life’s simple pleasures and found happiness in spending time with his dogs, watching The 700 Club and Gunsmoke, fishing, hunting, gardening, playing his guitar and reading his bible.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Roberson and Edna Mae Green; his grandparents, Johnnie Roberson and Levada Phenix; his maternal grandparents Ira Green and Mary Conners; his beloved wife, Joyce Roberson; his brothers, J-Vance Roberson, Quinton Roberson, and Sherman Roberson Jr.; his sisters, Hartense Roberson- Gilkey, Lillian Roberson- McBride,Carrie Lee Roberson-Jones, Rosa Marie Roberson- Harlin, and Rosemary Roberson-Sanchez ;his daughters, Zelma Roberson, Leslie Roberson, and Gayle Lanell Otuemhobe; and his sons, Vernon Roberson Jr. and Laroi Samuels.
