Vernell Thomas

Vernell Thomas, age 78, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on May 13, 2026. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. at Griffin Mortuary Chapel. Private Disposition under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Vernell Thomas was born August 8, 1947 in Panola County, to Earnest Thomas Sr. and Lillie Mae Brown. Vernell received his education in Shreveport, LA. He was a hard worker, who worked in the oil fields over 30 years in Hobbs, New Mexico.

He loved his family and when he smiled he brightened up the room. All the nieces and nephews loved him and he was the “Cool” uncle.

He is preceded in death by his mother Lillie Mae Brown, his father Earnest Thomas Sr., his brothers Earnest Thomas Jr. and Howard Thomas, his sisters Mary Cole and Lucy Thomas.

He is survived by his sisters Eva Morgan and Maggie Bunton, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He will be missed.
