Samuel J Hickmon Jr., 77, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026. Services has been postponed due to weather conditions. Updated information will be posted at a later date. Samuel J Hickmon Jr. was born at Old Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas on March 31, 1948 to Mother, Nadine Hickmon and Father, Samuel J Hickmon Sr, known lovingly as “Mr. SJ”. Samuel grew up in North Dallas, an area that was known in that time as a beacon for the Black Experience in the city during his formative years. Samuel was the 2nd child of Nadine and Mr. SJ as he was preceded by his brother, Freddie Lee Hickmon, born in 1942, and followed by his sister, Mary Nell Lacy, born in 1949. Sam, as he was more commonly known, was a man of few words, but those that knew him knew that when he spoke in his distinctive raspy tone that what you were hearing was undeniable.
Sam was a man who had many loves, most notably his love of music, his love of sneakers, his love of reading the newspaper and his trademark affinity for sweets. You would often find Sam sneaking to the refrigerator in the middle of the night looking to prepare a bowl of ice cream which was his favorite. Those of us that were blessed to have spent time with Sam knew that although he was a man of few words when he spoke it was something that you needed to hear.
Sam quietly kept the family together, always the shoulder to lean on when times were difficult and the one who could make you laugh during times of joy. The impact that Sam left on those that knew him will forever be felt.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Carrie Atkinson, mother, Nadine, father, Samuel Sr, brother Freddie, nephews Eric Lamont aka Larry and Frederick Toole aka FeFe, aunt Leon Williams, cousins Dannie Williams aka “Wahoo” and Malcolm Williams aka “Block”.
Sam is survived by sister Mary Nell Lacy, nephews Warren Hickmon, Frank Lacy, Duel Adams, Qunicey Toole and Evan Hickmon and nieces Letitia Simmons and Shirley Marie as well as a host of other friends and family. A great tribute and legacy to a life well lived.
