Melvin Earl Hicks “Bumpty”, 76, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11 am at Alexander Chapel C.O.G.I.C. Interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Visitations will be held Friday, October 4, 2024, from 4pm to 6pm at Griffin Mortuary. Melvin was born on January 27, 1948. He was the oldest of 9 children born to Bennie Hicks and Johnnie Dykes Hicks. He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1966.
Melvin married Fannie Thomas Hicks in 1984 in Dallas, Texas and they had 5 children. He attended Alexander Chapel C.O.G.I.C. for over 35 years. He worked for First Distribution Center, Red Cross, and Industrial Molding until he eventually started his own business service (Bumpty’s Lift Service) for over 30 years.
Melvin’s special interests included Working on Cars, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, (because it was his mom’s favorite team), and playing pool. Melvin’s special request “stay prayerful and treat people how you want to be treated.”
Melvin is preceded in death by his father Bennie Hicks, his mother Johnnie Dykes Hicks, his brother Glenn Hicks (Bertha), and his sister Bobbie Bogus (Edward).
Melvin leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife Fannie Thomas Hicks, his daughters Ritta Joy and Lana Joy, his sons Robert Joy, Greg Joy, and Bernard Washington, his sisters Claudette Hicks, Teresa Simpson, and Mae Lacy, his brothers Ferrion Hicks (Pearl), Bennie Hicks, Jr. (Rita), and DeWayne Hicks (Liza), 20 grandchildren, his extended family, Rynita “Sunshine” Wilson, and Gary Howard, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
