Leavera Parks Lusk was born October 15, 1930 to AP and Veola Parks in Buffalo, TX. She married Tysium Lusk in Crockett, TX in 1949. To their union were born 8 children. Leavera, lovingly known as “Granny or GiGi” to most who knew her, worked at the Lubbock State School for 20 years before she retired. She was an original member of First Progressive Baptist Church under the tutelage of Pastor Homer L. Avery. She later became a member of Divine Love Baptist Church, where she loved to attend and pay her tithes. Leavera, the unofficial neighborhood watch lady, enjoyed cooking for her friends and family. She was known for her cornbread dressing, peach cobbler, teacakes, and pound cake. She would throw crumbs out to the birds that she was so avidly loved to watch, most of all, Leavera loved family gatherings. Her door was always open and everyone was always welcome because “she paid $311.24 a month!”
